Percy Gordon Green was hit by a car that didn't stop.
Percy Green had been a homeless labourer. He had been walking along the Bristol Road with another labourer on the nearside in the evening when a car hit them both from behind. The other labourer said that when he recovered there was no trace of the car and that he then found Percy Green lying dead in a hedge.
The police said that they had checked over 250,000 files at the taxation office and examined hundreds of cars and interviewed hundreds of drivers, but said that they could not trace the car or the driver.
When the Coroner summed up he said that the motorist had shown callous disregard, stating that it was obvious that the driver knew that he had hit someone.
The inquest, which was held on Saturday 4 July 1959 returned an open verdict.
